Career Preparation Tips: Interview Tips
You have learned how to construct a killer resume, an awesome cover letter, and have successfully navigated through career fairs. So we have come up with some interview tips to use now that you landed yourself a meeting with a hiring manager. Walking into an office and sitting face to face with a stranger and faced with the task of convincing them why they should hire you is not an easy one. It can be nerve wracking and stressful because it is something that most people are not used to doing and usually under prepared for. Here are 10 interview tips that will help you prepare for a successful interview:
- Do some research beforehand. It shows that you are interested in how you can fit in and bring value to the company. This can make you stand out from other candidates because you will be able to answer questions with responses that are specific to their company.
- Look over the job requirements and match your skills and experience up to them. Do this so you can tell them exactly what kinds of value you bring to the table and how well you will be able to perform the job.
- Practice some general interview questions. Go over some common questions and come up with detailed and concise answers that focus on specific examples and accomplishments.
- Write down some question to ask the interviewer. You want to show that you have genuine interest in the position and what it entails. Ask questions like what qualities they look for in their employees and what kinds of opportunities for growth come with the position.
- Arrive about 15 minutes early so you have time to fill out any necessary paperwork and to get a little bit of a feel of the atmosphere around you.
- Dress appropriately for the company you are interviewing with.
- Practice good nonverbal communication. Keep good posture, eye contact, and have a firm handshake.
- Carry yourself professionally during the interview. Try not to come off as cocky and don’t seem overly desperate for the position. You want them to see you as calm, confident, and sincerely interested in the position.
- Bring a notepad and pen to write down information or answers to questions you have asked.
- Finally, be engaging and authentic! Really showcase who you will be as an employee with hints of who you are as a person. Employers want to hire genuine people, not robots.
