The assistant is responsible for finishing billing paperwork and processing adjustment requests. They are also responsible for answering any questions from patients, clerical staff, and insurance companies and resolving complaints from any of those parties. An important objective of being a billing assistant is to make sure that the patient’s information stays organized and confidential.

These assistants must have high ethical standards due to the serious confidential nature of patient information. They must explain charges and invoices to patients and their families often under stressful conditions, so they must be empathetic. The American Health Information Management Association identified skill requirements for medical billing and coding assistant which include the ability to work independently, have strong knowledge of the subject, and have good critical thinking and communication skills.
