The Ins and Outs of an HVAC Refrigeration System
As a HVAC technician, you will learn everything there is to know about the HVAC field. Once graduated from Lamson’s Commercial Refrigeration, Heating and Air Conditioning Program, students will be able to install, service, and repair both residential and commercial air conditioning, heating and refrigeration structures. The refrigeration system has four different parts that all come together to create a cold refrigerated area.
The first part of the refrigeration system is called the evaporator. This is a coil that contains the refrigerant. The refrigerant absorbs the heat and you are left with cold air that is distributed into the space that you are trying to cool. The next part of the system is called the compressor. This is one of the most important parts of the refrigeration system, it circulates refrigerant throughout the whole system. It will compress cold vapor into hot vapor and increases the vapor pressure.
The condenser is the coil that is located outside on a central air conditioning system. It removes the heat that is carried through the refrigerant while simultaneously forcing the hot air out. The last part of the system is the metering device which controls the flow of the refrigerant to the evaporator. There are different types of metering devices. Some of them have limiting devices to protect the compressor from overloading and some will control the evaporator’s pressure of super heat. These are called automatic expansion valves, capillary tubes and fixed bore.
In order for a refrigerator to work properly, all four of these components must be working proficiently. If one fails, then eventually the refrigeration cycle will fail and the space you are trying to cool will stay warm. This ultimately stresses the need for students interested in the HVAC field to learn about the refrigeration systems so that when a problem arises, help will be on the way.
