The medical field is rapidly growing career and phlebotomists are in high demand due to the need for Allied Health professionals. Lamson Institute offers a phlebotomy program that will prepare you with the needed education and training to succeed in a variety of entry level positions.
A phlebotomist collects blood for donation or for testing so that the blood can be analyzed in a clinical laboratory. Blood tests are important in the medical field because they are used to evaluate the effectiveness of medications, diagnose illness, and determine whether a patient is receiving proper nutrition. To collect a blood sample, the phlebotomist first applies a compressing device, or also referred to as a tourniquet, used to slow blood flow to the patient’s arm. A swab of alcohol is then used on the small area near the inside of the elbow to disinfect the area. The phlebotomist then locates a vein and inserts the needle, a process called “venipuncture.”
Medical professionals rely on the accuracy of blood test results for patient diagnoses’ and treatment processes. With that being said, it is important that the phlebotomist ensures that all equipment is properly sanitized before use and that accurate labeling and proper storage is being properly conducted. Phlebotomists must also take careful consideration to strict safety protocols to avoid direct contact with blood as several infectious diseases such as HIV and hepatitis can be transmitted through blood contact. So, the phlebotomist must be very cautious when drawing a patient’s blood.
The working conditions of a phlebotomist are often times in clinical laboratories, hospitals, community health centers, nursing homes, doctor’s offices, blood donation centers and other various health facilities. Phlebotomists often work under the supervision of a clinical laboratory technologist or another medical professional.
