Is It Too Late For Me To Start a New Career?
Maybe you have been working at the same boring job for years. Perhaps you find yourself regularly bouncing from job to job because you can’t seem to find one that you enjoy and that pays the bills. If you are currently less than happy at your job you have probably considered a career change. But it is also likely you have also asked yourself this daunting question: Is it too late for me to start a new career?
If you have found yourself contemplating this question, we have two pieces of good news for you. 1) You aren’t alone. 2) The answer is no! It is NOT too late for you to start a new career!
Not everyone takes a clear, straight path to success. In fact, most people don’t! The majority of people try out a number of paths before they find the one that meets their personal, professional, and financial needs. Check out this graphic that shows how a number of successful people took an indirect path to where they are today.
Harrison Ford
Ever heard of Harrison Ford? You know, that guy who was in Star Wars, Indiana Jones and like a million other different blockbuster films? He was described as a “lackluster” student in high school and eventually dropped out of college. After dropping out he gave acting a try but his early work wasn’t received with much enthusiasm. So he turned to a career of carpentry instead. Four years later he came back big with his role in the 1973 movie American Graffiti. And just four years after that he really hit the big times when he played the role of Han Solo in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. From carpentry to Star Wars…that certainly isn’t the straightest of paths, is it?!
JK Rowling
How about JK Rowling? Does that name ring a bell? That’s the lady who has sold an estimated 500 million copies of her work and holds the title of the ninth-best-selling fiction author of all time. She was a single mother living on welfare until the age of 31 when she made it big with the Harry Potter series. And now at age 52, Rowling is a household name who many characterize as the epitome of success.
Ray Kroc
And Ray Kroc; have you heard of him? His name might not be quite as familiar to you but the business he built probably is: McDonalds. Ray Kroc started McDonalds, the most successful fast food corporation in the world. But he didn’t start McDonalds until he was 52! Before that, he worked selling paper cups and milkshake mixers.
The point here is this: the path to success isn’t always straight and easy. In fact, it very rarely is. So if you are currently dissatisfied with your career, don’t be afraid to make a change! No matter where you find yourself in life, it is never too late to start fresh. You don’t have to remain stuck where you are. But making a change is up to you. Harrison Ford and JK Rowling and Ray Kroc didn’t accidentally stumble into their success. It took hard work and courage to change get to where they are today. And you can do the same.
