Here at Lamson Institute we love following the Crystastic Jewels phlebotomy channel on YouTube. Jewels has been a phlebotomist/laboratory professional for over 15 years and we’ve found her tips and tricks helpful to our budding lab assistant, EKG technician/phlebotomy students. Whether its order of the draw, test tube colors, safety, performing a draw or even dealing with anxious patients, Jewels has some advice. We encourage current students and graduates of the Lamson phlebotomy program to explore her videos as part of their study routine, or for some inspiration as they enter the job market.
In this great video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VkID0uAL8TU by Crystastic we hear all about interviewing for phlebotomy jobs. Let’s face it, interviews can be worse than public speaking, making bodily noises in front of your classmates, or having toilet paper stuck to your shoe.
Unless of course, you’re prepared for your interview!
In case you didn’t have time to scope Crystastic, and in case you don’t remember what your Lamson phlebotomy instructors and career advisors have said, here you go!
Dress and personality come first!
- Dress appropriately, meaning business casual. This means no multi-color, no leggings.
- Be your authentic self. Employers want to see the real you.
- Be confident in what you do.
- Maintain eye contact and attentiveness the whole time.
What are they going to ask?
- Know the basics of phlebotomy. Revisit your Lamson notes and texts and make sure you know what these abbreviations stand for. Crystastic says detailed questions are unlikely, but you should be comfortable with the following abbreviations:
- CBC
- PT
- INR
- BUN
- PSA
- RPR
Know some Chemistry! The periodic table is taught for a reason.
- Be able to explain the element K.
- Be able to explain what CO2 stands for.
While being able to answer the interview questions prepared by Crystastic Jewels will help you during your interviews, we at Lamson have a few more interview tips for you!
- Test yourself for knowledge retention by pairing up with another Lamson phlebotomy student.
- Utilize the career center on campus by meeting with an advisor. Consider wearing what you might wear to an interview and practice making eye contact, remaining attentive and being engaging. Ask your advisor to asses you. Mock interviews are great practice.
