Maybe you’re about to graduate from high school. Or perhaps you’re tired of your current job and looking to make a career change. No matter where you find yourself in life, if you are considering becoming an electrician, it’s smart to ask yourself: “Would I enjoy a career as an electrician?”
In this week’s blog we discuss some of the aspects of being an electrician to hopefully help people answer the question: “Would I enjoy a career as an electrician?”
Keep reading to find some questions to ask yourself in order to discover if you would enjoy a career as an electrician:
Do you enjoy working with your hands?
Working as an electrician invariably requires you to work with your hands regularly. Being skilled at working with your hands is called manual dexterity, and you’ll certainly need it in a career as an electrician! Good hand-eye coordination is also important to a career as an electrician, so if you play a lot of sports and/or video games, you’ve already been practicing your hand-eye coordination!
Do you want a job that requires physical activity?
Some people are well suited for a career sitting behind a desk. Other people cringe at the thought of a desk job and prefer a job that requires a certain amount of physical activity. If you lean more towards the desk job direction, perhaps a career as an electrician isn’t a great fit for you. Working as an electrician entails a significant level of physical exertion. In a given day on the job you might be climbing scaffolding/ladders/stairs, digging trenches, using heavy tools, and more. You certainly don’t have to be an Olympic athlete to work an electrician, but a level of physical fitness is important.
Do you work well with others?
In your career as an electrician you will encounter many occasions in which you will be required to work with others. You will regularly find yourself working with other electricians, a variety of other skilled tradespeople, as well as clients. While you will also periodically perform tasks on your own, a career as an electrician often entails working as part of a team. So if you thrive in a group setting, a career as an electrician might be a wonderful fit!
Do you want a job that offers security?
This might sound like a silly question (who doesn’t want job security??), but it is an important thing to think about! Not all jobs offer a significant amount of security but a career as an electrician is fairly secure. Think about all of the things we use in our daily life that depend on electricity: smart phones, televisions, computers, microwaves, lights, traffic signals, and so on. These things are central to modern human existence and our dependence on these things isn’t going anywhere. Neither is the need for skilled tradespeople who can keep the power on. So if you are looking for a job that offers a significant amount of security, becoming an electrician could be a great fit for you!
So if you enjoy working with your hands, being physically active, working as part of a team, and you are looking for a career that offers security, then the answer to the question “Would I enjoy a career as an electrician?” may very well be “YES!”
